It also makes a major contribution to the larger project of ethnobotany by describing aspects of a nomadic peoples' conceptual relationships with the plants of their homeland. Bedouin Ethnobotany offers the first detailed study of plant uses among the Najdi Arabic-speaking tribal peoples of eastern Saudi Arabia. A Bedouin asking a fellow tribesman about grazing conditions in other parts of the country says first simply, "Fih hayah?" or "Is there life?" A desert Arab's knowledge of the sparse vegetation is tied directly to his life and livelihood. ![]()

![]() ![]() ![]() Moore takes the term historical novel to a new extreme here, creating a coherent narrative around the War of Currents of the late 1800s – the public dispute over whether the nation’s power grid should run on direct current, favored by Thomas Edison, or alternating current, favored by Nikola Tesla and George Westinghouse – by relying on the historical record as much as possible for descriptions of characters, scenes, and even dialogue. ![]() His second novel, The Last Days of Night, came out last August and just appeared in paperback this spring, and is about as good a work of popular, contemporary fiction as I’ve come across. Graham Moore won the Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay in 2015 for his work on The Imitation Game, particularly impressive for a first-time screenwriter with just that and one novel under his belt at the time. ![]() ![]() ![]() I tend to make changes to the way I’m writing the story, not to the story itself. I’ve never changed the overall architecture of a novel in the middle of building it, but I make changes when I find a better way to do something, a more effective way of moving the story along or creating tension or providing a window into motivation or character. Other approaches work well for other writers. That method suits me and has done for fifteen years as a full-time professional. That means the initial writing is quite slow, but there’s not a lot of re-drafting needed later. When I’m ready to start, I don’t do a quick and dirty first draft, I write a few chapters at a time, then edit them before I move on. I prepare outlines and synopses and chapter plans. I’m one of those writers who plan things out in some detail before they start a new book. The deadline is getting uncomfortably close. I’m writing the last part of a novel with the working title Caller, part three of the Shadowfell series of historical fantasy books intended for a YA/adult crossover readership. For now, let me fill you in on the current state of my work in progress. She can make them do and think and say what she wants all the way through the story. Characters come from the mind of the writer, where else? The writer invents them, so they dance to her tune. What’s this? Me, the arch-planner, admitting that my characters sometimes have a will of their own? I’ve always dismissed that idea as nonsense. ![]() ![]() ![]() However, should the sword fall into evil hands, the world of birdkind shall be in peril. Milton's photographs are a joy to behold and if you have his photographic book on Marilyn too, many of these pictures will be familiar to you, although there were a couple of gems in there which I had not seen. It finishes somewhat abruptly, but that is purely due to her not carrying on this project I suspect and never revisiting it. It starts with the struggles she had in her childhood and goes through her hard work in trying to break into Hollywood and finally finishes just after her marriage to Joe. The reader may profitably read a recent lucid, scholarly, balanced and in-depth account of Hayek’s book and how it came to be written by professor Bruce Caldwell, titled The Road to Serfdom After 75 Years. He does not advocate untrammelled free markets, nor put down every socialist idea. Yet, most people miss the nuanced key message of Hayek. The subsequent fall of the Soviet Union was a vindication of his dire warnings about collectivism. The Ronald Reagan and Margaret Thatcher revolutions were supposed to have been inspired by the ideas of Hayek. Hayek, probably horrified by rampant misreadings and the selective or mischievous quoting of his book, wrote Why I Am Not a Conservative in 1960, as if to distance himself from his ardent admirers. Even George Orwell approved of the book’s main thesis. ![]() Yet, he found himself to be mostly in agreement with Hayek’s liberal ideas. He also reflects on his past relationships and experiences, and realizes that they were all ultimately meaningless and transient. He begins to explore the concept of freedom, and comes to the realization that he is completely free to make his own choices, but that this freedom comes with the burden of responsibility. In the second part, Roquentin delves deeper into his existential crisis. He becomes obsessed with the idea of time and the transience of human existence, and begins to feel as if his own existence is meaningless. He finds himself unable to connect with the people and things in his environment, and begins to question the nature of reality itself. ![]() In the first part, Roquentin begins to experience a sense of nausea and detachment from the world around him.
